Maternal Age and Parity as Predictors of Human Twinning

Abstract: A case-control study was conducted to evaluate the association between maternal age and parity and dizygotic (DZ) and monozygotic (MZ) twinning, respectively. Mothers of all twins born alive in Denmark in 1984 or 1985 were included into the study as cases, and a random sample of mothers of singletons were controls. Data on maternal age at delivery and number of previous births were collected from the Danish Medical Birth Register. By means of logistic regression analysis, a significant and positive association… Show more

“…Similar to previous studies, we found that DZ twinning was strongly associated with older maternal age and mother's ethnicity 20–23 . Rates of twinning have been observed to be low in Hispanic populations; 19 however, this is one of the first studies to examine the rates of DZ and MZ twinning among Hispanics.…”

“…The age-specific twinning rates (TWRs) for Finland for the periods 1951-1960, 1981-1990and 1991-2000. The periods are 1951-1960, in which the total TWR attains its highest value (15.5 per 1000), [1981][1982][1983][1984][1985][1986][1987][1988][1989][1990], for which it obtains it minimum (10.8 per 1000) and 1991-2000, for which a new increase in the total TWR has resulted in a twinning rate of 14.7 per 1000.…”

“…If the discrepancies between the results of direct and indirect standardization methods for Finland (Figure 1) are caused by the variation in the mean parity, then the parity effect in Denmark will only be slight. In fact, Bønnelykke (1990) stated that there was no association between DZ twinning and parity for mothers of all twins born alive in Denmark in 1984 and1985. This conclusion by Bønnelykke (1990) was drawn from logistic regression analysis where the association between DZ twinning and parity was adjusted for maternal age.…”

“…A high frequency of monozygotic pairs among children born to mothers older than 30 years was an unexpected event, since it is known that the monozygotic twinning rate declines as maternal age increases. 21,22 A small but significant difference (t = 2.422; P = 0.015) was observed when the maternal mean age for singletons (31.12 years ± 4.60) was compared to that for twins [31.93 years (SD 4.49)]. Twins also differed significantly from singletons in relation to the mean gestation order (1.82 for twins and 2.01 for singletons), the Mann-Whitney test resulting in Z = 2.97; P = 0.003.…”
