Maternal and neonatal outcomes of grand multiparas over two decades in Mali

Abstract: The healthy person effect may explain grand multiparas' lower odds of maternal death. Reducing grand multiparity and improving grand multiparas' access to prenatal care may improve population-level perinatal outcomes.

“…Generally, in high order births (more than three) women experience multiple and life-threatening complications. Grand multiparous women are older and less likely to have accessed antenatal care, which results in an increased risk of maternal complications and poor neonatal outcomes (16,18,34). The results also showed a signi cant relationship between high-risk pregnancies and maternal healthcare utilisation.…”

“…Also, women who had given birth to a large number of children (more than three births) and had them in shorter birth intervals of less than 18 months were found to be more vulnerable to experience several pregnancy complications: pre-eclampsia, pregnancy infections, miscarriage, stillbirth and low birth weight [16,[18][19][20][21][22]. Additionally, access to reproductive healthcare services remained a key determinant of a sound pregnancy and healthy outcome [17,23].…”

“…Parity is also one of the most effective factors on the APGAR score. Anemia, uterine atony and chronic diseases may explain the association between multiparity and low APGAR scores (21) . There are conflicted results in several studies about the effect of parity on the neonatal birth weights.…”

“…Higher number of parity is a well known parameter which is associated with low APGAR scores and poor neonatal outcomes (19)(20)(21) . But there is still a lack of data about the relationship between parity and neonatal outcomes related to vacuum-assisted deliveries.…”
