Maternal and perinatal risk factors associated with congenital syphilis

Abstract: Objective Mother‐to‐child transmission of syphilis remains an important global public health problem. Untreated intrauterine infection may result in adverse events for the fetus or newborn (NB). Maternal risk factors, such as prenatal care, early diagnosis, and appropriate treatment, significantly impact the likelihood of vertical transmission of syphilis. The purpose of this review is to evaluate maternal risk factors for congenital syphilis and the characteristics of exposed NB. Methods A total of 14 studies… Show more

“…The greatest areas of improvement identified in this study included inadequate prenatal care, late maternal initiation of treatment, and inadequate infant follow-up. This corroborates a meta-analysis from Brazil showing prenatal care and adequate maternal treatment as having the highest impact on CS development [ 18 ]. Hence, improved monitoring to reduce the risk of vertical transmission as well as reducing the infectious syphilis burden in the general population would go a long way in reducing this burden.…”

“…Half those deaths occurred in 2022, underlying the current nature of this rapidly escalating reemergent public health menace and urgent need for public health interventions. Infant deaths associated with CS are preventable; Mississippi could reduce infant illness and death by promptly diagnosing and treating pregnant patients with syphilis ( 13 ).…”
