Maternal diet quality during pregnancy and its influence on low birth weight and small for gestational age: a birth cohort in Beijing, China

Abstract: Maternal nutrition during pregnancy plays a vital role in foetal growth and development. The present study aimed to describe the diet quality of pregnant women and explore the association between maternal diet and the prevalence of low birth weight (LBW) and small for gestational age (SGA). A total of 3 856 participants from a birth cohort in Beijing, China were recruited between June 2018 and February 2019. Maternal diet in the 1st and 2nd trimesters was assessed by inconsecutive 2-day 24-hour dietary recalls… Show more

“…Although we observed a statistically significant positive association, it could be due to the impact of other factors, such as maternal nutrition that may influence birth weight. As such, nutritional intake was not considered in this study, although it could have an impact on low birth weight 45 . Therefore, we could not completely exclude the influence of dietary intake on metal exposure measurements 46 .…”

“…For pregnant women, nutrition is essential to maintain and meet the mother's and foetus's nutritional needs in the womb (Ministry of Health, 2019). Several studies have found that milk consumption during pregnancy has an impact on foetal growth, although the role of the ingredients in milk needs further investigation (Achón et al, 2019;Huang et al, 2022;Yang et al, 2022;Rohmawati et al, 2023).…”

“…Undernutrition is a significant global problem in newborns. Despite the efforts of many nations, organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and researchers, more research on the molecular mechanisms of maternal nutritional regulation of fetal skeletal muscle growth and development is still needed [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ].…”
