This paper reviews evidence regarding change in healthcare-provider behaviour and maternal and neonatal outcomes as a result of emergency obstetric and neonatal care (EmONC) training. A refined version of the Kirkpatrick classification for programme evaluation was used to focus on change in efficiency and impact of training (levels 3 and 4). Twenty-three studies were reviewed -5 randomised controlled trials, 2 quasi-experimental studies and 16 before-and-after observational studies. Training programmes had all been developed in highincome countries and adapted for use in low-and middle-income countries. Nine studies reported on behaviour change and 13 on process and patient outcomes. Most showed positive results. Every maternity unit should provide EmONC teamwork training, mandatory for all healthcare providers. The challenges are: scaling up such training to all institutions; sustaining regular in-service training; integrating training into institutional and health-system patient-safety initiatives; and 'thinking-out-of-the-box' in evaluation research.

Objectives:To assess the proportion of women subjected to intimate partner violence and the associated factors, and to identify the attitudes of women towards the use of violence by their husbands.Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting:Family practice clinics at a teaching hospital in Karachi, Pakistan.Participants: A total of 520 women aged between 16 and 60 years were consecutively approached to participate in the study and interviewed by trained data collectors. Overall, 401 completed questionnaires were available for analysis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the association of various factors of interest. Results:In all, 35% of the women reported being physically abused by their husbands in the last 12 months. Internasjonal medisinMødrehelse og helsebistand2 [38][39][40] Betring av mødrehelsa vart i år 2000 nedfelt som eit av tusenårsmåla til FN og får stor politisk merksemd, også fra norske politikarar. Framleis er svangerskap og fødsel farleg for helsa til fattige kvinner verda over. Analysar av helsearbeid og bistandsøkonomi dei siste ti åra viser ein gledeleg auke i bistand, samstundes som det er stor skeivfordeling mellom ulike land og mellom ulike målgrupper. Løyvingar til mødrehelse-arbeid er utilstrekkelege og planar og fråsegner vert ikkje følgde.
