Maternal quercetin administration during gestation and lactation decrease endoplasmic reticulum stress and related inflammation in the adult offspring of obese female rats

Abstract: Maternal QI in obese dams during gestation and lactation reduced birth weight and postnatal BW gain in the offspring, and helped to improve insulin sensitivity and lipid metabolism of the mature offspring via reducing ER stress and related inflammation in the liver and adipose tissue.

“…Different studies have shown that the administration of polyphenols to dams during prenatal and early postnatal periods can exert beneficial effects on body fat gain and different metabolic disorders, such us dyslipidaemia, insulin resistance and inflammation, on their offspring in later life [15][16][17]19]. However, in most of these studies, the metabolic programming effects of polyphenols have been observed after the administration of these compounds at high doses.…”

“…However, to the best of our knowledge, there is little data concerning the effects of polyphenol intake during pregnancy and lactation on maternal metabolism in studies that evaluate the metabolic programming effects of these bioactive compounds on the offspring. Related to this, Wu et al [19] recently demonstrated that the administration of quercetin during pregnancy and lactation at different doses improved the lipid profiles of the dams and that these beneficial effects were also observed in their offspring in adulthood, indicating that the effects of polyphenols on maternal metabolism affects early programming of the offspring.…”
