“…Further studies have expanded on the foetal origins hypothesis to show that children’s risk of experiencing chronic illness as adults is also associated with mothers’ lifestyle and health risk behaviours during pregnancy and after childbirth. These include unhealthy dietary practices [ 20 ], lack of physical activity [ 20 ], maternal tobacco smoking [ 21 , 22 ], and harmful consumption of alcohol by pregnant mothers [ 5 , 23 ]. These findings indicate a growing need to better understand the prevalence of these common health conditions among mothers and how they impact their offspring’s long-term health.…”

“…A variety of environmental factors have been shown to contribute to the development of children's temperament. For instance, maternal smoking during pregnancy is associated with children who have lower sociability, lower persistence, and higher reactivity and these associations remain stable throughout childhood (Sutin, Flynn, & Terracciano, ). Also, a warm and nurturing parenting style predicts decreases in shyness over time when compared to other parenting styles (Sanson & Oberklaid, ) and interventions to teacha more responsive parenting style help children to become more cooperative 2–3 years later (van den Boom, ).…”

“…Poor maternal health can lead to low neonatal weight and reduced chances of survival, congenital abnormalities, problems with child behavior, poor school performance, and adult health and productivity [ 67 - 69 ]. Furthermore, maternal behaviors such as smoking or alcohol consumption during pregnancy may be significant drivers of infant health issues [ 70 , 71 ]. Therefore, health apps that allow pregnancy tracking are promising tools for improving knowledge about maternal and newborn health, thus decreasing the chances of pregnancy-related complications and child health issues.…”
