Maternal use of antidepressant or anxiolytic medication during pregnancy and childhood neurodevelopmental outcomes: a systematic review

Abstract: Antidepressant and anxiolytic medications are widely prescribed and used by pregnant women for acute and maintenance therapy. These drugs are able to pass the placental barrier, and may potentially influence fetal and brain development. It is possible that exposure to prenatal antidepressants or anxiolytic medication may disturb neurotransmitter systems in the brain and have long-lasting consequences on neurodevelopment in the offspring. As all medication during pregnancy may pose a certain risk to the develop… Show more

“…One possible cause is that the rates of maternal smoking and antipsychotics among pregnancy women are rare in China. This does not mean that children being exposed to smoking and antipsychotics in utero are risk-free of dyslexia, as it has been shown that maternal smoking and antipsychotics had adverse effect on offspring’s reading ability2140. Finally, we did not obtain the family history of dyslexia and other language disorders, because our team was the first one studying dyslexia in Chinese in Hubei province.…”

“…Well-designed observational studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been called for to resolve these conflicting findings [19], but because RCTs involving pregnant women are ethically problematic, observational studies addressing confounding by indication and other potential confounders take precedent [20]. In this study, using data from the Norwegian Mother and Child cohort study (MoBa), we aimed to evaluate whether prenatal exposure to BZDs and z-hypnotics affects internalizing or externalizing behavior problems in children at ages 1.5 and 3 years.…”

“…In the medical literature there are descriptions of a number of studies (Naeye & Peters, 1987;Salova, 2009;Calvigioni & Hurd, 2014;El Marroun, White, Verhulst, & Tiemeier, 2014;Hebebrand & Verhulst, 2014;Sayal, Heron, Draper, Alati, Lewis, Fraser,…, & Gray, 2014;Tiesler & Heinrich, 2014), proving the negative impact of intrauterine hypoxia, including of toxic origin, on the child's mental ontogenesis, even in cases of favorable outcome. Medical research cannot replace the psychological study of the issue.…”
