The main target of the present research work is fabrication of low-cost poly(styrene) based membrane towards water filtration purpose. A zwitter ion functionalized poly(styrene) based random co-polymer was synthesized by one pot method. Acid and amine functionalized styrene-based co-polymer was synthesized by a free radical solution polymerization method in the presence of dicumylperoxide as a lone chemical initiator by one pot method under N2 atmosphere with vigorous stirring. The zwitter ion functionalization of styrene monomer was carried out through Friedel-Crafts alkylation method. The synthesized random copolymer was characterized using FT-IR, 1 H-NMR spectra, DSC, TGA, SEM, EDX, GPC, XPS, WCA, POM and XRD techniques. The tensile strength of the copolymer was tested. The FT-IR spectrum showed a peak corresponding to C-N stretching and O-H stretching. The DSC showed the highest Tg of 96.9 o C for the styrene based random copolymer.
