Mathematical Modeling of Diffusion and Transport of Pollutants in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer

Abstract: The process of dispersion of air pollutants, in a broad sense, can be considered as the net outcome of various mechanisms involved in the transport of air pollutants from the source to the receptor. The major mechanisms are: (1) advection of pollutants by mean air motion, (2) mixing of pollutants by atmospheric turbulence and (3) mass diffusion due to concentration gradients. In addition, the physical and chemical nature of the effluent, the location of the stack and the nature of the terrain downwind from the… Show more

“…Pollutants in the atmosphere, once released from an emission source, undergo various processes on which their concentration at a given place and time depends. These phenomena include dispersion processes such as pollutant advection, mixing of pollutants resulting from turbulent air movements, or mass diffusion processes resulting from differences in concentration gradients [22,23]. Of major importance in contaminant dispersion is horizontal air movement, i.e.…”

“…Predicted monthly mean concentrations were found to be Consequential to observations. (Sharan & Gopalakrishnan, 2003) studied the dispersion of air pollutants under weak wind conditions using a mathematical model on Delhi, (Sharan et al, 2000) using a three-dimensional mesoscale model showed that urban weather conditions had no major influence on the dispersion of hazardous chemical gases during the Bhopal gas accident. (Abdoulaye & Sodré, 2007) modeled the attenuation on the ground of the concentration of emissions from a diesel thermal power plant.…”
