Background: Every year, tens of thousands of patients die world-wide because of infections associated with the health system. One source of hospital-acquired infections which reportedly have reached prevalence levels of 7-10%, are poor hygiene measures. These can be addressed, among others, by scheduling a reliable hospital cleaning workforce, responsive to hospital requirements and safety standards. Methods: To model the problem, we develop a hybrid simulation model which captures features such as variation in demand as well as cleaning durations. Our model enables us to evaluate the current workforce schedule from a collaborating European hospital using a variety of performance metrics (e.g., waiting time for ad-hoc cleaning jobs) and levels of detail (e.g., response time broken down by time of day). Using a mixed-integer linear programming approach, we generate alternative schedules. Results: Our results indicate substantial improvements as compared to current planning: While the baseline workforce planning model with 13 cleaners sometimes fails to adequately cope with the demand, the demand coverage can be improved substantially with reshuffling the same number of cleaners. Conclusions: Using our simulation model and the MIP approach, hospital managers can provide a more reliable and safer environment for patients and staff.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought challenges and opportunities to teaching in higher education. The sudden pivot from in-person to online education posed unprecedented challenges to both teachers and students. At the same time, the sudden worldwide suspension of traditional ways of lecturing opened a space for experiments with innovative pedagogic approaches and techniques, including various forms of real-time inter-university exchange and student cooperation. COVID-19 pandemic caused a sudden and disruptive shift to emergency remote learning and teaching, as well as a simultaneous halt to international mobility of students, faculty and staff. These changes to established modes of teaching and learning in higher education along with the de facto end of all international mobility efforts led global health course directors from York University in Canada and Fulda University of Applied Sciences in Germany to establish a globally networked learning environment involving shared virtual lectures and international collaborative group projects. Students reported benefits of an enriched learning experience through the sharing of different perspectives, approaches and debates with international professors and peers. Coordination relating to time differences and expectations played a key role in success and overcoming challenges for collaboration among students. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that cross-border inter-university teaching and learning is a feasible and beneficial pedagogic option.

Purpose In recent decades, the student population in dormitories has increased notably, primarily attributed to the growing number of international students. Dormitories serve as pivotal environments for student development. The coordination and compatibility among students can significantly influence their overall success. This study aims to introduce an innovative method for roommate selection and room allocation within dormitory settings. Design/methodology/approach In this study, initially, using multi-attribute decision-making methods including the Bayesian best-worst method and weighted aggregated sum product assessment, the incompatibility rate among pairs of students is calculated. Subsequently, using a linear mathematical model, roommates are selected and allocated to dormitory rooms pursuing the twin objectives of minimizing the total incompatibility rate and costs. Finally, the grasshopper optimization algorithm is applied to solve large-sized instances. Findings The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in comparison to two common alternatives, i.e. random allocation and preference-based allocation. Moreover, the proposed method’s applicability extends beyond its current context, making it suitable for addressing various matching problems, including crew pairing and classmate pairing. Originality/value This novel method for roommate selection and room allocation enhances decision-making for optimal dormitory arrangements. Inspired by a real-world problem faced by the authors, this study strives to offer a robust solution to this problem.
