Mating call variation in lake frogs referred to as Rana ridibunda Pallas, 1771

Abstract: The mating call of Rana ridibunda varies considerably among populations throughout its geographical range of distribution. Multivariate analyses of nine call parameters demonstrate the existence of three distinct groups of populations which differ in the degree of temperature dependence of four parameters, and specifically in the number of pulses/pulse group and pulse groups/call. Since discriminant functions distinguish among these groups with very low rates of false classification and since the degree of dif… Show more

“…We are aware that terminology and definition of units and structures in anuran vocalizations will continue to be a matter of debate, as classification of natural phenomena into fixed human-made categories by principle has to fail to a certain extent. Several authors already provided definitions of units and terms (e.g., Heyer et al 1990;Schneider & Sinsch 1992;Duellman & Trueb 1994;Glaw & Vences 1994;Köhler 2000;Toledo et al 2015a), but these were not necessarily in complete agreement, not followed, or in part inconsistently applied in subsequent works. Herein, our proposed definitions and terminology are aimed at reaching a maximum consensus among anuran taxonomists without ignoring or loosing aspects of logic and current knowledge.…”

“…The second line of evidence was derived from the temporal structure of advertisement calls using quantitative bioacoustic methods which have permitted detection of cryptic species (e.g. Schneider, So®anidov & Kyriakopoulou-Skavounou, 1984;Schneider & Sinsch, 1992). Allozymes represent the third character complex which in Odontophrynus has only been studied to assess dose effects in gene expression (Schwantes, Schwantes & Bec Ëak, 1976, 1977, without exploiting the potential to estimate the genetic divergence between the forms.…”
