Mating mediates morphophysiological changes in the spermathecae of Coptotermes gestroi queens

Abstract: Insect spermathecae play a crucial role in sperm storage and maintenance prior to egg fertilization. Within eusocial insects, this structure is well studied in the Hymenoptera, whose queens copulate during a short period early in life and store sperm for up to decades. Within Isoptera, sperm storage and maintenance inside the spermatheca are poorly understood, especially due to the presence of a sperm-providing king. Here, we compared the morphometric and morphophysiological features of the spermathecae of vir… Show more

“…The spermatheca corresponds to a sac‐shaped reservoir (Figures 12C‐D), whose morphology varies among termite families (Costa‐Leonardo & Patrício, 2005), and is connected to the genital chamber by a spermathecal duct. Their secretory cells are composed only of class 3 cells (Costa‐Leonardo & Patrício, 2005; Raina et al, 2007; Silva & Costa‐Leonardo, 2023). Such cells are responsible for the secretion of content associated with sperm storage and maintenance (Silva & Costa‐Leonardo, 2023).…”

“…Silva & Costa‐Leonardo (2023) investigate the reproduction of the invasive termite Coptotermes gestroi (Wasmann) (Rhinotermitidae). They describe the morphological and physiological changes of the queen's spermatheca following mating.…”
