“…The need for a higher filling pressure to optimize myofilament alignment might explain our finding of improved economy of force production at high end-diastolic pressures in the newborn heart. Second, the newborn myocardium has been noted to have an immature sarcoplasmic reticulum, and consequently has a greater reliance on the sarcolemma for excitation-contraction coupling (6).
