Orchid seeds are very small, extremely light and produced in great numbers. Most range in length from c. 0.05 to 6.0 mm, with the difference between the longest and shortest known seeds in the family being 120-fold. The ' widest ' seed at 0.9 mm is 90-fold wider than the ' thinnest ' one, which measures 0.01 mm (because orchid seeds are tubular or balloon-like, ' wide ' and ' thin ' actually refer to diameter). Known seed weights extend from 0.31 µg to 24 µg (a 78-fold difference). Recorded numbers of seeds per fruit are as high as 4 000 000 and as low as 20-50 (80 000-200 000-fold difference). Testae are usually transparent, with outer cell walls that may be smooth or reticulated. Ultrasonic treatments enhance germination, which suggests that the testae can be restrictive. Embryos are even smaller : their volume is substantially smaller than that of the testa. As a result, orchid seeds have large internal air spaces that render them balloon-like. They can float in the air for long periods, a property that facilitates long-distance dispersal. The difficult-to-wet outer surfaces of the testa and large internal air spaces enable the seeds to float on water for prolonged periods. This facilitates distribution through tree effluates and\or small run-off rivulets that may follow rains. Due to their size and characteristics, orchid seeds may also be transported in and on land animals and birds (in fur, feathers or hair, mud on feet, and perhaps also following ingestion).

Epidendrum denticulatum (Orchidaceae) produces nectar on the petioles of buds, flowers, and fruits (extrafloral nectaries) but no nectar is found on its flowers, and it is probably a deceptive species. In the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest, some aspects of both the ecology and behavior of Camponotus sericeiventris (Formicinae) and Ectatomma tuberculatum (Ponerinae), two ant species foraging on E. denticulatum extrafloral nectaries, were investigated. Both experiments, using termites as baits and field observations, suggest that these ant species are able to prevent reproductive organ herbivory, without affecting pollinator behaviour. Since a low fruit set is often cited as a characteristic of the family, especially for deceptive species, ants attracted to orchid inflorescences protect reproductive structures and increase the probability of pollination success. Epidendrum denticulatum flowers were visited and probably pollinated by Heliconius erato (Nymphalidae) and Euphyes leptosema (Hesperiidae).Key words: ant-plant interaction, foraging behaviour, extrafloral nectaries, pollination ecology. RESUMO Formigas visitam nectáreos de Epidendrum denticulatum (Orchidaceae) em uma área deMata Atlântica: efeitos sobre herbivoria e polinização Epidendrum denticulatum (Orchidaceae) produz néctar nos pecíolos de botões florais, flores e frutos (nectáreos extraflorais), mas não em suas flores, e provavelmente "engana" seus polinizadores. Numa área de Mata Atlântica, investigamos alguns aspectos da ecologia e comportamento das formigas Camponotus sericeiventris (Formicinae) e Ectatomma tuberculatum (Ponerinae), ambas encontradas forrageando em nectáreos extraflorais de E. denticulatum. Tanto experimentos usando cupins como iscas quanto observações de campo sugerem que ambas as espécies de formiga têm a dupla capacidade de limitar a herbivoria dos órgãos reprodutivos da espécie estudada, sem interferir no comportamento dos polinizadores. Uma vez que baixa taxa de frutificação é característica das orquídeas, principalmente de espécies sem néctar floral, as formigas atraídas para suas inflorescências estão protegendo as estruturas reprodutivas e aumentando a probabilidade de sucesso de polinização. As flores de E. denticulatum são visitadas e provavelmente polinizadas por Heliconius erato (Nymphalidae) e Euphyes leptosema (Hesperiidae).Palavras-chave: interação planta-formiga, comportamento de forrageamento, nectáreos extraflorais, ecologia de polinização.

-(Floral traits in a specialized pollination system: Calathea cylindrica (Roscoe) K. Schum. (Marantaceae) and Euglossini bees). Pollination specialization is promoted by floral features that favor pollinator fidelity and hinder the access to resources by other visitors. We investigated the pollination mechanism of one understory herb in southeastern Brazil. Calathea cylindrica flowers year-round and its flowers are peculiar because of the fusion and modification of some elements, asymmetry, secondary pollen presentation, hidden nectar, and a long and narrow tube, which is closed before pollinator visit. Pollination occurs by means of an explosive mechanism, and once it is triggered, the floral parts do not return to their initial position. Thus, there is only a single possibility for pollen transference. Pollinators are female Euglossini bees and all flowers have already been visited by mid-morning. Specific movements with enough force are necessary for the visitors to access the nectar. Bagged flowers secreted around 13 µL of nectar with 32% of sugar concentration. Nectar secretion continues after removals, but in small volumes. Continual flowering, high production of nectar and secretion after pollination may promote pollinator fidelity. The complex floral structure, the secretion in which the flower base (nectar chamber) is dipped, and the narrow tube with inner hairs make the access to nectar difficult and may work as barriers for other visitors. Altogether, these factors seem to regulate the highly specialized pollination system of Calathea cylindrica.Key words -bee, Euglossini, floral specialization, nectar, pollination RESUMO -(Atributos florais em um sistema de polinização especializado: Calathea cylindrica (Roscoe) K. Sistemas de polinização especializados estão ligados a características que incentivam as visitas por polinizadores e desestimulam visitas por outros animais. O mecanismo de polinização de uma espécie de Marantaceae foi estudado com ênfase nessa questão. Calathea cylindrica é uma erva com flores disponíveis o ano todo. As flores são peculiares pela fusão e modificação dos elementos, assimetria, apresentação secundária de pólen, néctar pouco acessível e tubo longo, estreito e fechado até a visita do polinizador. A polinização consiste em um mecanismo explosivo, sendo que uma vez disparado, as estruturas florais não retornam à posição inicial. Assim, há uma única possibilidade para transferência de pólen. Os polinizadores são fêmeas de abelhas Euglossini (Apidae) e no meio da manhã todas as flores já haviam sido visitadas. O acesso ao néctar em flores intactas requer a realização de movimentos específicos e com força apropriada, o que exclui outros insetos. A quantidade de néctar produzido em flores ensacadas foi em torno de 13 µL com 32% de concentração de açúcares.
