Maximizing the Benefits of Real Time Monitoring of Geotechnical Construction

Abstract

This paper provides an overview of an adaptive management approach applied to deep supported excavations wherein attendant ground movements are the key design issue. Examples from excavations are presented which illustrate various aspects of the method, including selection of the proper performance observations, what construction activities to include when simulating the construction process, and factors affecting selection of the constitutive model. Current limitations of the approach with respect to supported excavations are discussed.
