Maximizing the Effectiveness of One-time Standards Instruction Sessions with Formative Assessment

Abstract: Liao's research projects range from basic fire science (material flammability, solid pyrolysis, ignition, microgravity combustion, flame spread, etc.) to understanding fire behavior in specific situations (such as structures, spacecraft, or wildland fires). Her work has been supported by NSF, NASA, CASIS, and UL. She currently serves on the Board of Advisors in the Central State Section of the Combustion Institute. From 2013-2014, Dr. Liao worked on thermal fluids and two-phase flow problems in the petroleum i… Show more

“…Survey respondents mostly pointed to LibGuides and research guides when asked about modes of standards instruction and outreach, while librarian-taught one-shot, guest lecture sessions and research consultations were among the top selected responses to standards education (see Figure 7). Using LibGuides and research guides is interesting as this differs from the standards education literature which focuses on the forms of workshops and case study instruction (Rowley et al, 2020;Solomon et al, 2019). Self-serve options for standards education, such as self-paced tutorials (Phillips et al, 2017), can be made accessible and discoverable online.…”

“…To support engineering and ET programs, many academic libraries maintain technical standards collections (Phillips, 2019), and many science and engineering librarians integrate standards content into information literacy instruction (Cioc et al, 2021;Phillips & McPherson, 2016;Solomon et al, 2019). However, both collecting standards and teaching about standards pose unique discovery and access challenges (Phillips, 2019).…”

“…This content can be accessed free of charge or for a small fee via various eLearning programs [8,9,10,11]. Likewise, universities have taken it upon themselves to create technical standards training modules, workshops, and events into their curriculum and courses [12,13,14,15]. This distribution of responsibility for technical standards education is further supported by one pre-survey conducted in anticipation of a two-day workshop hosted by the American Society for Engineering Education in 2018.…”

“…They also recognize that collaborations with outside organizations, companies, and technical societies will allow them to provide more relevant and targeted content. This shift in educational ownership of technical standards content delivery at the undergraduate level can be seen in the increasing integration of modules and case studies into university engineering courses and the reaffirmation and efforts on behalf of standards organizations to provide educators with access to technical standards resources and information [7][8][9][10][11][12][13]17].…”
