May–July precipitation reconstruction from oak tree‐rings for Bohemia (Czech Republic) since AD 1040

Abstract: This contribution presents a near‐millennium‐long reconstruction of May–July (MJJ) precipitation for Bohemia, the western part of the recent Czech Republic. A well‐replicated chronology of oak (Quercus spp.) tree‐ring width (TRW) measurements covering the 1040–2013 period was employed as a high‐resolution hydroclimatic proxy. Standardized TRW indices were calibrated to selected grid points from the CRU precipitation database, covering the geographical distribution of the oak data used. The oak TRW chronology e… Show more

“…The resulting annual ring width values were visually synchronized and cross-dated using PAST4 (Knibbe 2004), as well as statistically controlled via COFECHA (Grissino-Mayer 2001). The final tree-ring width series were dated according to the latest version of the Czech oak tree-ring width chronology (Kolář et al 2012;Prokop et al 2017;Dobrovolný et al 2018). Then, each precisely dated annual oak increment was separated and finely cut (separately for early wood and late wood) with a scalpel or razor blade under a stereomicroscope into small pieces.…”

“…Such reconstructions may reflect spring-summer precipitation (e.g., Brázdil et al, 2002;Oberhuber and Kofler, 2002;Touchan et al, 2005;Wilson et al, 2005Wilson et al, , 2012Kern et al, 2009;Cooper et al, 2012;Dobrovolný et al, 2018) or indicate drought directly, as expressed by PDSI (Esper et al, 2007;Nicault et al, 2008;Büntgen et al, 2010aBüntgen et al, , 2010bTouchan et al, 2010;Cook et al, 2014).…”

“…The question remains as to how exceptional are the droughts that occurred in the instrumental period in the context of past centuries or millennia. The frequencies and duration of major droughts now rank highly among the priorities of modern drought research (Trnka et al, 2018). Among events in 15 the pre-instrumental period, particularly long and extensive extreme droughts have been derived from tree-ring data (e.g., Stahle et al, 2007;Cook et al, 2010aCook et al, , 2010b, for which the term "megadroughts" has been coined.…”
