MCDM Model for Evaluating and Selecting the Optimal Facility Layout Design: A Case Study on Railcar Manufacturing

Abstract: Facility layout in a manufacturing system is a complex production activity because decisions on layout design are influenced by numerous, ambiguous, and competing factors. This study proposes a method for determining and choosing an ideal layout using a hybridized Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (F-AHP) with the Fuzzy Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (F-TOPSIS). The F-AHP is used, in this case, because of its ability to generate design criteria weight. The railcar industri… Show more

“…To do this, a tool such as the Spearman correlation is utilized. The values obtained using this method, according to [29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36], range from −1.0 to 1.0, going down to 0, and are interpreted as follows: if they are close to 1.0, there is a positive correlation; if they are close to −0.1, there is a negative correlation; and if the value is 0, there is no connection. That is, in the case of positive correlation, there is an association in which, by increasing the value in a range, the related one also increases; the contrary happens in the case of negative correlation; and, in the case of 0, it is absent.…”

“…Therefore, the optimization of production is always important for companies. The optimal layout of production machines and workplaces plays an important role in production efficiency and space saving [8]. It is important mainly from the point of view of high prices, various limitations of production equipment, time-consuming processing, unpredictability of repairs, etc.…”
