It has been shown, for example, that the Md-QDa characteristics of the fan deposits described below suggest transport by mass movement (McArthur, 1982) and elsewhere in the region the building of 'alluvial fans' in the same valleyside location and from the same bedrock type has been attributed to debris flow (Read, 1976;Pierson, 1980). It thus seems appropriate that a distinction be made between 'valley-side fans' such as those studied in this investigation and the larger 'valley-floor fans' associated with streams debouching from substantial catchments.…”
