Mean platelet volume and eosinophilia relationship in patients with bullous pemphigoid

Abstract: In this study high levels of MPV and eosinophil levels have been detected. MPV may be a useful indicator of the risk of vascular events. Prospective studies are needed to compare disease activity, thromboembolic events and MPV in BP patients.

“…Platelet parameters might be influenced by coronary risk factors including age, obesity, smoking, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, metabolic syndrome, stroke, peripheral artery disease, and deep vein thrombosis [101]. MPV can also be affected by thyroid diseases, bullous pemphigoid, malignancy, and medications such as anticoagulant therapy and statins [102,103]. Karaman, et al [104] initially reported that MPV values significantly decreased after treatment in all grades of prostatitis and BPH.…”

“…In fact, although the role of the blood coagulation system including platelets has not yet been investigated in experimental models of BP, some evidence exists on the relationship between inflammation and coagulation. It has been reported that patients with BP show elevated levels of tissue factor, D‐dimer, prothrombin fragment F1+2 and mean platelet volume and that they have an increased risk for thrombotic events …”

“…Previous studies demonstrated that symptoms of patients with BP are associated with a plethora of raised cytokines and chemokines in sera and blister fluids . Moreover, the activation of the coagulation cascade seems to be involved in the disease pathophysiology …”
