“…Detection of measles antibody by RIA has been conducted by the use of virion antigen (Kiessling et al, 1977;Arstila et al, 1977) . In the present study, a procedure of RIA was developed by using the persistently infected cells , HeLa/ MV cells, as a solid-phase antigen to detect measles IgG antibody .…”

“…Much of this interest is due to the facts that measles virus is considered as an etiological agent of SSPE (Connolly et al ., 1967;Horta-Barbosa et al, 1969;Payne et al, 1969), and that there is circumstantial evidence linking measles virus infection to multiple sclerosis (Salmi et al, 1972;Norrby et al ., 1974). Thus, radioimmunoassay (RIA) has been applied to the detection of measles antibodies by several investigators (Arstila et al, 1977;Kiessling et al, 1977;Vuorimaa et al, 1978). In the present study, we developed an indirect RIA technique for detection of measles antibody using HeLa cells persistently infected with measles virus as solid-phase antigen and applied the technique to the detection of measles antibody in the sera and CSF of patients with SSPE and multiple sclerosis.…”

“…The possibility that the virus is, anyway, atypical or attenuated and consequently of altered immunogenicity is supported by the observation by Rebel et al (1981) of absent 'replication' associated antigens (L+P). These arguments, however, do not all pertain in SSPE, where blood and cerebrospinal fluid contain an IgM anti-measles antibody (Kiessling et al 1977).…”

“…Measles antibodies in CSF in SSPE patients correlate with the presence of oligoclonal IgG bands [Link et al, 1972;Vankvik and Norby, 19731, and measles antibody activity can also be traced to polyclonal CSF IgG [Shorr et al, 19811. Controversial results have been reported regarding measles-specific IgM antibodies in SSPE [Connolly et al, 1971;Najera et al, 1972;Kiessling et al, 1977;Ziola et al, 19791. The positive results have often been correlated to the presence of IgM rheumatoid factor as a source of unspecificity.…”
