Measurement in Cross-Cultural Neuropsychology

Abstract: The measurement of cognitive abilities across diverse cultural, racial, and ethnic groups has a contentious history, with broad political, legal, economic, and ethical repercussions. Advances in psychometric methods and converging scientific ideas about genetic variation afford new tools and theoretical contexts to move beyond the reflective analysis of between-group test score discrepancies. Neuropsychology is poised to benefit from these advances to cultivate a richer understanding of the factors that underl… Show more

“…A measure may demonstrate CCMB if the regression models that relate the predictor (here: cognitive functioning) to a predicted outcome (e.g., years of education) differ between ethnic groups [39,40]. Bias is likely if (a) ethnic groups differ in cognitive functioning (regression intercepts) and (b) ethnic groups differ in the associations between cognitive functioning and completed years of education.…”

“…Third, racial and cultural biases need to be considered in evaluating the results of neuropsychological testing. While there are only a few studies that have examined racial differences in neuropsychological testing in the context of TBI (Kennepohl, Shore, Nabors, & Hanks, 2004), such biases have been broadly documented when testing different racial or ethnic groups (Baird, Ford, & Podell, 2007;Pedraza & Mungas, 2008;Wilkie et al, 2003). Fourth, ligation status of the patient needs to be considered, as it can often distort the clinical presentation, particularly in mild TBI (Larrabee, 1997(Larrabee, , 2000.…”
