Measurement of acceleration: a new method of monitoring neuromuscular function

Abstract: A new method for monitoring neuromuscular function based on measurement of acceleration is presented. The rationale behind the method is Newton's second law, stating that the acceleration is directly proportional to the force. For measurement of acceleration, a piezo-electric ceramic wafer was used. When this piezo electrode was fixed to the thumb, an electrical signal proportional to the acceleration was produced whenever the thumb moved in response to nerve stimulation. The electrical signal was registered a… Show more

“…As compared with the TOF ratio measured mechanomyographically using a force transducer-the gold standard of the neuromuscular monitoring device, the TOF ratio assessed acceleromyographically is prone to be higher when the TOF ratio evaluated mechanomyographically is more than 0.7 [28]. Additionally, Kopman [29] reported that even when recovery from neuromuscular block was significant, T1/control assessed electromyographically tended to return to only 0.8.…”

“…On the other hand, accelerographic TOFR is comparable to mechanical TOFR in the mechanical TOFR range of 0 to 0.70. 11 However, accelerographic TOFR tends to be higher than mechanical TOFR when mechanical TOFR > 0.70. 11 This finding would also concur with the present results that the accelerographic TOFR in the P-TOF group was higher than the mechanical TOFR in the S-TOF group.…”

It has been shown that a mechanical TOFR > 0.9 correlates well with signs of adequate recovery of neuromuscular blockade.…”
