Measurement of Azimuthal Anchoring Energy of Nematic Liquid Crystal on Photoaligning Polymer Surface

Abstract: A method to determine the surface azimuthal anchoring energy of a nematic liquid crystal is proposed. The technique implies the measurement of the director deviation on the cell substrate as a fbnction of strength and direction of the applied magnetic field. As an example, the dependence of the azimuthal anchoring coefficient on the exposure time is measured at the interface between the nematic K15 and polyvinylcinnamate film exposed by UV light. The analogous measurements performed in a wedge cell show that t… Show more

“…Anchoring strength is an important factor in a wide range of topics including display device switching 27 , wetting transitions on structured surfaces 8 and in the onset of spontaneous flow in active systems 28 . From an experimental point of view, the anchoring strength of a substrate is difficult to measure, and most methods involve the optical properties of the liquid crystal 29,30 , or its response to applied electric 31,32 or magnetic 33 fields. In this study we show that it is not only the anchoring type but also that the anchoring strength that has an important effect on microfluidic flows of nematics, which consequently has the potential to be used to quantify anchoring.…”

“…These two parameters are critical design parameters for every liquid crystal device [3]. A variety of experimental methods have been proposed to measure anchoring parameters, in particular the anchoring coefficient W [4,5]. Most of them measure surface director deviations in an external field and involve rather complicated optical setups.…”

“…At the zero electric field, the fabricated TN cell displays a uniform white color throughout the whole area of the cell, which shows that the Mauguin’s condition generally called a normally white mode in the Fig. 5(a) 5657. By increasing the applied voltage, the orientation of 5CB changes from the twisted to the homeotropic states with decreasing transmittance.…”
