Measurement of catecholamines and their metabolites

Abstract: Analysis of the low levels of catecholamines and metabolites in tissue and biological uids has necessitated the use of highly sensitive analytical techniques. Earlier procedures utilizing radioenzymatic and immunological assays, gas chromatography or uorimetry have generally been superseded by highly sensitive and selective chromatographic methods utilizing electrochemical or uorimetric detection. The development of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods for the measurement of plasma metadrenali… Show more

“…Analysis of catecholamines and metanephrines in plasma and urine can be done by several analytical techniques. Earlier procedures using radioenzymatic assays have generally been superseded by highly sensitive and specific HPLC methods using electrochemical detection (HPLC-ECD) (25,26). Technical improvements have led to the development of a new technique: the liquid chromatography tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) (27).…”

“…To address whether changes in biogenic amines and metabolites caused by various physiological conditions can be quantified by this method, we have examined the Drosophila mutant iav 1 . The iav 1 mutant was initially isolated due to its reduced locomotor activity and its genetic lesion has recently been mapped to the gene coding for the TRPV channel subunit IAV.…”

“…1 Prior to chromatography, sample clean-up is commonly performed using one or two solid-phase extraction (SPE) columns to remove potentially interfering substances. With the increasing availability of bench-top tandem mass spectrometers in the clinical laboratory, it is possible that these detectors could substitute for ECD as highly specific and robust analytical instruments for urinary catecholamines 3 and metanephrines.…”
