Measurement of computer communication networks

Abstract: Measures, tools, and techniques applicable to the performance measurement of computer communication networks are described for technicians who procure computer services from a remote access network. Cost considerations are discussed as a major component of evaluation, and measurement and evaluation methodologies are surveyed. External measurement techniques that encompass both the intermediate user-network interface and the distant interface between user and the serving computer system are recommended. An 80-i… Show more

“…Designer-builder John Abrams of the South Mountain Company in West Tisbury, Massachusetts, USA describes three factors that are driving the popularity of large houses: "First, with less of a sense of community and public life in our culture, the home becomes a fortress which needs to contain everything we need, including multiple forms of entertainment, rather than basic shelter; second, the building industry has been selling 'big is better' and the message has been heard; and third, diminishing craft and design generosity has resulted in sterile homes-people mistakenly think that what's missing is grandeur: more space" (Abrams 1998).…”

“…This paper presents a framework for such external measurement and identification, including a multidimensional descriptive model which portrays the components of the levels and conditions considered to be important in the measurement methodology and a new tool which has been designed and implemented to collect the necessary data. This tool, the Network Measurement Machine (NMM), is part of a larger Network Measurement System (NMS), which includes a library of data analysis programs and can be used for a variety of measurement applications [4]. Tables I, II, and III, several categories of measures are described in the following sections.…”
