Measurement of craniovertebral angle with Electronic Head Posture Instrument: Criterion validity

Abstract: Abstract-This study evaluated the criterion-related validity of the Electronic Head Posture Instrument (EHPI) in measuring the craniovertebral (CV) angle by correlating the measurements of CV angle with anterior head translation (AHT) in lateral cervical radiographs. It also investigated the correlation of AHT and CV angle with the Chinese version of the Northwick Park Questionnaire (NPQ) and Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS). Thirty patients with diagnosis of mechanical neck pain for at least 3 months without … Show more

“…1 Craniovertebral angle 10,14,19,20 : Where a line drawn from the tragus of the ear to the C7 vertebra intersects a horizontal line, the CV angle is formed (Fig 1). It is used to measure the value of forward head posture, and the greater the value of this angle, the more forward the head is positioned on the neck.…”

“…Lau et al 10 used the Electronic Head Posture Instrument (EHPI) to calculate CV angles and to correlate the CV angle values with anterior head translation (AHT) values obtained from radiographs (Fig 1). The authors stated that EHPI has excellent intrarater and interrater reliability (both with ICCs = 0.99).…”

“…The first one was a horizontal line that crossed the C7 marker, and the second one was an oblique line that linked up the C7 and tragus markers. The CCA was measured as the angle between the two lines [20][21][22][23]. This procedure has shown good reliability with an intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) of 0.98 and good construct validity in comparison to radiography with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.89 [24].…”

“…Ardından bireylerin yan profilden, tragus ve servikal 7. vertebrayı içine alacak şekilde fotoğrafları çekildi ve servikal anterior tilt, C7-tragus açısı kullanılarak da değerlendirildi (Resim 1). 13 İlk ölçümlerinin ardından bireylere rijit bant uygulaması yapıldı. Bu bantlama yapılırken, bireylerin skapulalarını retrakte etmeleri ve bu pozisyonu korumaları istendi.…”
