Measurement of Creatine kinase and Aspartate aminotransferase in saliva of dogs: a pilot study

Abstract: BackgroundMuscle enzymes in saliva have been reported to be possible markers of heart and muscle damage in humans. The aim of this study was to assess if Creatine kinase (CK) and Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities could be measured in canine saliva, and to evaluate their possible changes in situations of muscle damage.ResultsThe spectrophotometric assays for CK and AST measurement in saliva of dogs showed intra- and inter-assay imprecision lower than 1 and 16% and coefficients of correlation close to … Show more

“…The analysis of salivary biomarkers has gained increasing popularity in recent years particularly since the collection of saliva is easy and noninvasive. Salivary urea and creatinine concentrations (determined on a biochemistry analyzer) are significantly increased in dogs with CKD; and therefore, these parameters can be used as markers of renal failure .…”

“…8,9 In addition these enzymes in saliva can change in situations of intensive exercise, 10 peptic ulcers, 11 myocardial infarction 12 and muscle damage. 13 To the authors' knowledge, no data about any possible influence of pre-analytical factors on measurements of these three enzymes in saliva have been reported. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of saliva collection and processing methods on their measurements.…”
