Measurement of forces and moments around the maxillary arch for treatment of a simulated lingual incisor and high canine malocclusion using straight and mushroom archwires in fixed lingual appliances

Abstract: Results from this study suggest that mushroom archwires may provide better mechanics for movement of teeth in the anterior segment when using a round archwire; however, only biomechanical data was considered in this study and there are many factors that need to be considered in treatment planning.

“…The straight lingual archwire 6 requires a thicker composite base between the tooth and bracket that further decreases the interbracket distance for the lingual appliance and can potentially change the location of load application with respect to the CR. 7 Prior research has also demonstrated significant differences in the biomechanical systems of straight and mushroom lingual archwires. 7,8 Dental arch expansion through an engaged archwire is one of the strategies used in orthodontics to resolve dental crowding.…”

“…7 Prior research has also demonstrated significant differences in the biomechanical systems of straight and mushroom lingual archwires. 7,8 Dental arch expansion through an engaged archwire is one of the strategies used in orthodontics to resolve dental crowding. Grauer and Proffit 9 demonstrated that fully customized lingual orthodontic appliances were accurate in achieving the goals planned in the initial set-up with the exception of the full amount of planned expansion.…”

“…Badawi et al designed a promising system to accurately measure the six degrees of freedom of orthodontic forces applied on all teeth by fixed appliances. The designed system was successfully used to study orthodontic force on full dentition with an archwire in several treatment scenarios . These in vitro measurement systems provide useful tools for the clinical estimation of orthodontic force.…”

“…The designed system was successfully used to study orthodontic force on full dentition with an archwire in several treatment scenarios. [16][17][18][19][20] These in vitro measurement systems provide useful tools for the clinical estimation of orthodontic force. However, it is timeconsuming and costly to physically produce the oral treatment condition in vitro for accurate measurement.…”

“…[18][19][20] Precisely applying such relatively low force levels has already been shown to be possible with an intrusion arch. 19,21 Even though some studies have used a full arch simulation to study load systems in orthodontics, [22][23][24] the literature fails to show how much force is applied to a specific tooth when an intrusion bend is placed on a finishing wire. Therefore, the aim of this study was to measure whether a standardized intrusive vertical bend in a maxillary lateral incisor produces any side effects in other planes of space.…”
