Measurement of Hyperfine Structure and Isotope Shift of Transitions in Gadolinium Using Blue Diode Laser

Abstract: Laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy using a single-longitudinal-mode diode laser has been applied to investigating isotope shifts and the hyperfine structures of gadolinium in the wavelength region of 400 nm. Six absorption spectra of transitions from the ground and low-lying metastable levels were measured. The isotope shift per unit mass change varied from 0.6 to 1.0 GHz depending on the transition. The hyperfine splitting constants of 157Gd and 155Gd isotopes were determined for the six upper levels of … Show more

“…Recently Gd absorption spectra have been measured in the 400 nm region using an extra-cavity GaN laser. 3) The spectral patterns are similar to those in the yellow-red region. The value of isotope shift per unit mass change varies in the range of 0.6-1.0 GHz in this wavelength range.…”

“…Therefore the value of Á i is the isotope shift. According to the measured spectral data 2,3) the Á 1 's were set to 200 and 280 MHz for the three-step and the two-step photoionization of 156 Gd, respectively. From the absorption measurements for the second excitation step, 9) the isotope shifts were twice or more larger than those for the first excitation step.…”

“…Blaum et al [28] have measured IS and hfs in all 4f 7 5d6s 2 9 D → 4f 7 5d6s6p 9 F +1 transitions of Gd I with the aid of high-resolution resonance ionization mass spectrometry. Absorption spectra of Gd I in the region of 560-600 nm have been studied by Niki et al by means of laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy using CW dye laser [29] and also using blue diode laser [30]. A violet diode laser spectroscopy has been employed to investigate IS and hfs in two spectral lines by Yi et al [31].…”
