Measurement of plasma momentum exerted on target by a small helicon plasma thruster and comparison with direct thrust measurement

Abstract: Momentum, i.e., force, exerted from a small helicon plasma thruster to a target plate is measured simultaneously with a direct thrust measurement using a thrust balance. The calibration coefficient relating a target displacement to a steady-state force is obtained by supplying a dc to a calibration coil mounted on the target, where a force acting to a small permanent magnet located near the coil is directly measured by using a load cell. As the force exerted by the plasma flow to the target plate is in good ag… Show more

“…The thrust force exerted on the thruster by the plasma is obtained by measuring the displacement induced by the plasma ejection 19 . A 45-cm-diameter pendulum target plate simulating the debris is suspended from a pivot located at z = 35.9 cm downstream from and to the right of the thruster, and the force exerted on the target plate is obtained from its measured displacement combined with a calibration coefficient relating the displacement to the force 40 . The direction of both the forces and the displacements is defined as positive for the rightward direction with the detailed procedures for calibration of the two force measurements described in the Method section.…”

“…7. By sweeping the calibration coil current and measuring the displacement by the LED sensor and the force by the load cell, the calibration coefficient can be obtained for each direction as demonstrated previously 51 . Figure 8 shows the measured relations between the force and the displacement sensor signal in the (a) radial (V r -F rc ) and (b) axial (V z -F zc ) directions, where the signals include some oscillating components of the pendulum.…”

“…Furthermore, the experiment in Ref. [23] has shown the excellent agreement between the directly measured thrust and the force to the target. Since the energy range of the incident ions is similar to and the target material is same as those in Ref.…”

“…Since the energy range of the incident ions is similar to and the target material is same as those in Ref. [23], the measurement reported here is considered to be reliable. Figure 2 (a) shows the schematic diagram of the experimental setup.…”
