Measurement of Premorbid Adjustment in Chronic Schizophrenia

Abstract: The Premorbid Adjustment Scale (PAS) is a rating scale which was developed to be applicable in a research setting. It is designed to evaluate the degree of achievement of developmental goals at each of several periods of a subject's life before the onset of schizophrenia. A description of the scale and its use is presented, along with a discussion of psychometric properties. The PAS has been found to be useful in identifying patients likely to become chronically hospitalized or at high risk for readmission. It… Show more

“…Because earlyonset cases show more striking early developmental impairment, 5 ratings for early language, social and educational adjustment were completed using a modification of the ratings by Hollis. 9 In addition, the Premorbid Adjustment Scale (PAS) 23 and the Autism Screening Questionnaire, which has good discriminative validity with respect to the separation of pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) from non-PDD diagnoses at all IQ levels, 24 were completed through parental interviews and chart review.…”

“…As early-onset cases show more striking early developmental impairment, 12 ratings for early language, social, and educational adjustment were completed using a modification of the scale used by Hollis. 30 In addition, the Premorbid Adjustment Scale (PAS) 31 and the Autism Screening Questionnaire (ASQ), which has good discriminative validity with respect to the separation of Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) from non-PDD diagnoses at all IQ levels, 32 were completed through parental interviews and chart review.…”

“…The diagnosis of schizophrenia was made by two experienced research clinicians using DSM-III-R criteria based on detailed history and mental state examination and all available historical information, gleaned from extensive contact with previous treatment facilities and family members. We evaluated schizophrenic volunteers with the SCID (First et al, 1995), the Schedule for the Deficit Syndrome (Kirkpatrick et al, 1989), the MPRC Involuntary Movement Scale, the Cannon-Spoor Premorbid Adjustment Scale (Cannon-Spoor et al, 1982), and the Prognostic Scale (Strauss and Carpenter Jr, 1974). Data from some of these patients were previously published (Lahti et al, 1995a).…”
