Measurement of the ${}^{136}$Xe two-neutrino double beta decay half-life via direct background subtraction in NEXT

et al.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the half-life of the 136 Xe two-neutrino double beta decay performed with a novel direct background subtraction technique. The analysis relies on the data collected with the NEXT-White detector operated with 136 Xe-enriched and 136 Xe-depleted xenon, as well as on the topology of double-electron tracks. With a fiducial mass of only 3.5 kg of Xe, a half-life of 2.34 +0.80 −0.46 (stat) +0.30 −0.17 (sys) × 10 21 yr is derived from the background-subtracted energy spectrum. The present… Show more

“…× 10 21 year. This result agrees with the previous measurements from KamLAND-ZEN, EXO-200, and NEXT collaborations [13][14][15]. Our measurement with PandaX-4T, which is initially designed as a dark matter direct detection experiment, demonstrates the physics reach of large liquid xenon TPC on multiple fronts.…”

“…XENON1T, another natural xenon-based TPC, has demonstrated excellent detec-tor performance at the MeV range [11] and performed a search for NLDBD very recently [12]. The half-life of 136 Xe DBD has been measured [13][14][15] and the most precise result of 2.165±0.016(stat.)±0.059(syst. )×10 21 years is given by EXO-200 [13].…”

“…A measurement of the two-neutrino mode of the ββ decay (2νββ) in 136 Xe was performed combining data samples taken with 136 Xe-enriched (90.9±0.4%) and 136 Xe-depleted (2.6±0.2%) gas, referred to as Run-V and Run-VI, respectively [10]. A total exposure of 271.6 days (208.9 days) was collected in Run-V (Run-VI), with a small DAQ deatime of ∼3% due to the 83m Kr data taking and a trigger efficiency of 97.6±0.2% above 400 keV.…”

“…The Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC (NEXT) is an experimental program based on this technology with xenon enriched in 136 Xe serving as both the source and detection medium. The latest experiment in this program to finish operation, NEXT-White [2], has demonstrated (with 3.5 kg of xenon) superb energy resolution at 1% FWHM at 2.5 MeV [3], measured the 2𝜈𝛽𝛽 half-life [4] and searched for 0𝜈𝛽𝛽 [5]. The forthcoming NEXT-100 [6] experiment is currently under construction and will search for 0𝜈𝛽𝛽 with 100 kg of enriched xenon (91% 136 Xe) with sensitivity to a half-life of 6 × 10 25 years at the 90% confidence level after three years of operation [7].…”
