Measurement of the beam asymmetry in η photoproduction off the proton

Abstract: The beam asymmetry, Σ, was measured at ELSA in the reaction γ p → η p using linearly polarised tagged photon beams, produced by coherent bremsstrahlung off a diamond. The crystal was oriented to provide polarised photons in the energy range Eγ = 800 to 1400 MeV with the maximum polarisation of Pγ = 49 % obtained at 1305 MeV. Both dominant decay modes of the η into two photons and 3π 0 were used to extract the beam asymmetry from the azimuthal modulation of the cross section. The measurements cover the angular … Show more

“…8. All the experimental results for the γp → pη reaction [35,82,83] are in reasonable agreement; for γn → nη only results from the GRAAL experiment [64] are so far available. We have already discussed above the strong contribution of the S 11 (1535) -D 13 (1520) interference to the beam asymmetry, which is responsible for the fast rise of the A 0 coefficient from threshold.…”

“…The fact that the fits (with many free parameters) can describe the data does not of course guarantee that the right physics is included in the models. An instructive example of this is given in [83]. The measured beam asymmetries around W ≈ 1.8 GeV are compared in Fig.…”

“…For the measurements targets of 12 C, 40 Ca, 93 Nb and 208 Pb were used. A more detailed description of the detector setup and the running conditions has been given in [9,10]. The detector acceptance was determined by Monte Carlo simulations using the GEANT3 package, including all features of the detector system, trigger conditions and all cuts for particle identification.…”

“…The ω and η mesons are reconstructed in the ω → π 0 γ → 3γ and η → π 0 π 0 η → 6γ decay channels, respectively. A more detailed description of the detector setup and the running conditions has been given in [14][15][16][17].…”
