Measurement of the electric form factor of the neutron at Q2 = 0.3-0.8 (GeV/ c) 2 ⋆

Abstract: Abstract. The electric form factor of the neutron, GE,n, has been measured at the Mainz Microtron by recoil polarimetry in the quasielastic D( e, e ′ n)p reaction. Three data points have been extracted at squared four-momentum transfers Q 2 = 0.3, 0.6 and 0.8 (GeV/c) 2 . Corrections for nuclear binding effects have been applied. “…In [21], the flavor form factors are extracted from the polarization data of the ratios of nucleon Sachs form factors. Diehl and Kroll [22] have recently extracted the flavor form factors from R p , R n , G The only parameter in the model is fixed by fitting to the data for the proton form factor ratio [45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52]54] and [38,55] ; (c)-(f) represent the contributions from different flavors. The experimental data are taken from [21,22].…”

“…This expectation and the absence of suitable pure neutron targets make the deuteron a natural choice for extracting properties of the neutron. Though the neutron elastic electric form factor has been especially difficult to extract, the use of polarized beams and targets in d( e, e ′ n)p [1,2] and polarized beams with neutron recoil polarimetry in d( e, e ′ n )p [3,4,5,6,7] has allowed statistically precise measurements.…”

“…This technique has been exploited to measure the proton electric to magnetic form factor ratio for large values of the squared four-momentum transfer, Q 2 , using a hydrogen target [10,11,12]. In order to extract the neutron electric form factor, the d( e, e ′ n )p reaction has been exploited at the MIT-Bates Laboratory [3], Mainz [4,5,7] and Jefferson Lab (JLab) [6]. However, nuclear effects can compromise the direct connection between the polarization transfer coefficients and the neutron form factors.…”
