Measurement of the Flow Field Generated by Multicopter Propellers

Abstract: This paper presents the results of research on the airflow around a multirotor aircraft. The research consisted of the analysis of the velocity field using particle image velocimetry. Based on the tests carried out in a wind tunnel, the distribution of the velocity and its components in the vertical plane passing through the propeller axis were determined for several values of the angle of attack of the tested object for two values of airflow velocity inside the tunnel, i.e., vwt = 0 m/s and vwt = 12.5 m/s. “…For instance, it can be applied as the coupling with rotating blade [25], in structural health monitoring (SHM) in buildings [26] or used by the side of highways, where the wake-induced vibration phenomena is observed by cars [27]. One of potential ways it can be the coupling of the system with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for powering the low-demanding sensors [28,29].…”

“…Wind tunnel tests also allow the evaluation of aerodynamic interference of the aircraft [19] or measurements of aerodynamic interference of a hybrid aircraft with multirotor propulsion [20]. Wind tunnel testing can be extended by the measurement of the flow field around the test object using, for example, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) [21]. Unfortunately, wind tunnels often are used long support systems of models with a low level of damping, which affects the nature of the flow around the object and the generation of turbulence during the experiments.…”

“…The Particle Image Velocimetry method is useful for an experimental testing of propellers. This method was used in [ 29 ] to analyze propeller flow.
