Measurement of theC12(π,2π) reactions and possible evidence of a double-Δ excitation

Abstract: Cross sections, pion momentum spectra, and angular distributions for the reactions n C(n~\n + n~) and X2 C (K~,2n~) at a bombarding energy of 292 MeV were measured with a 360° spectrometer. An enhancement of the cross-section ratio of ,2 C(;r~,2/r -) to n C(n~\JZ* K~) relative to that of the elementary cross sections was observed, and is discussed in terms of various nuclear-medium effects including a double-A production channel.

“…They found that the cross section for this process increases rapidly with incident pion energy, from about 15%%uo of the DCX cross section at 240 MeV to one-third to one-half of the DCX cross section at 270 MeV. This prediction, 1.96 mb for ' 0 at E;", =270 MeV, is consistent with the experimental result of Grion et al [46], but exceeds that of Rahav et al [47] by about a factor of 3. Some of these theoretical results are compared with the present data in Figs.…”

“…Inclusion of production does allow the theoretical cross sections to agree with those measured at 270 MeV. However, as mentioned previously, the present data for the doubly differential cross sections at this incident energy, which the calculation exceeds in the region of the spectrum in which pion production is kinematically allowed, as well as the (n, 2m') measurements of Rahav et al [47,48], indicate that this effect may have been overestimated by the authors of Ref. [30].…”

“…Most other π2π measurements deal only with total cross sections. These include old data taken with emulsion techniques [20], and more recently, with a magnetic spectrometer similar to CHAOS [21]. Since π2π total cross sections are not part of the present discussion, these data will not be considered in this work.…”
