“…At the same time these new techniques will have systematic uncertainties of their own which will need to be understood in order to interpret the results of these new experiments together with the previous (p,␥) results. Initial measurements of the Coulomb dissociation of 8 B have already been reported (Motobayashi et al 1994), indicating that their preliminary results are consistent with the (p,␥) results of Filippone, et al (1983aFilippone, et al ( , 1983b and are encouraging for further studies to provide an independent determination of S 17 (0). Recently, the NABONA collaboration has measured initial data utilizing a 7 Be beam and a hydrogen gas target .…”

“…More recently, at the INT Workshop on Solar Nuclear Fusion Rates (1997), a more selective analysis was used to cite the Filippone et al (1983aFilippone et al ( , 1983b experiment as the most reliable of the direct measurements, resulting in a recommended value of S 17 (0)ϭ19 Ϫ2 ϩ4 eV b. We now appear to be on the threshold of a series of promising new experiments to measure the rate of this reaction using a variety of new techniques, such as 7 Be beams, new 7 Be target strategies, and the Coulomb dissociation of 8 B. Measurements with these techniques will have the advantage of avoiding some of the systematic uncertainties inherent in the previous (p,␥) measurements [e.g., questions relating to target uniformity and the determination of the 7 Be content of the target through the 7 Li(d,p) 8 Li reaction].…”

“…[5], the Coulomb dissociation cross section was translated into S-factors for the 7 Be(p, γ) 8 B radiative capture process. From this it was concluded that the 7 Be(p, γ) 8 B Sfactor at solar energies is likely to be smaller than 20 eV-b, supporting the lower [4] of the two direct 7 Be(p, γ) 8 B measurements.…”

“…[6] result in a 7 Be(p, γ) 8 B S-factor at solar energies of 12 ± 3 eV-b. This value is noticeably smaller than the S-factors obtained in direct capture measurements [2,3,4] and, if correct, will obviously have important consequences for the understanding of the solar neutrino puzzle. Our present estimate for the E2 cross section is based on a simple potential model and clearly calls for an improved treatment.…”
