Measurement of the J/ψ production cross section in 920 GeV/c fixed-target proton–nucleus interactions

Abstract: The mid-rapidity (dσ pN /dy at y=0) and total (σ pN ) production cross sections of J/ψ mesons are measured in proton-nucleus interactions. Data collected by the HERA-B experiment in interactions of 920 GeV/c protons with carbon, titanium and tungsten targets are used for this analysis. The J/ψ mesons are reconstructed by their decay into lepton pairs. The total production cross section obtained is 3 σ J/ψ pN = 663 ± 74 ± 46 nb/nucleon. In addition, our result is compared with previous measurements.

“…For the heavy mesons we use PYTHIA8, which allows to switch on only the charmonium or bottomonium production processes. 4 We find the total production cross-sections σ J/ψ 250 nb and JHEP03(2021)272 σb b 1.3 nb, in reasonable agreement with the literature [42][43][44]. From the results of our simulations, and using a total proton-proton cross section σ pp 40 mb [45], we compute the average number of mesons produced per proton interaction, reported in table 1.…”

“…Several parameterisations of the distributions of events in sidebands fit well. We use the parameterization with two free parameters which gives the smallest χ 2 /ndf: Ce Fitting with the fixed value of β = 6, i.e., the value used for our study of J/ψ production [13] yields the same p T value, and the same χ 2 /ndf.…”

“…The result of the simulation is validated by comparing it with existing measurements. Particularly, the flux of muons passing through the beam dump [17] and the production rate of J/ψ [18] in the simulation and measurements are found to be in good agreement. Assuming N POT = 10 22 that corresponds to running the experiment for 3 years [19], the expected number of χs that reach the detector is in the order of 10 16 at = 1 and 10 8 at = 10 −4 .…”
