This chapter introduces the basic notions used in the measurement of the polarization of a particle and in its interpretation. We use, as a prototype, the case of a vector particle (the $$\text{J}/\psi$$meson,a virtual photon, the Z boson, etc.) decaying into a lepton-antilepton pair.In particular, we address the general shape of the decay angular distribution, its relation to the particle polarization, the meaning of the relevant parameters, and the main difficulties usually encountered in polarization measurements.
