Measurement of the Risk for Substance Use Disorders: Phenotypic and Genetic Analysis of an Index of Common Liability

Abstract: On p. 241, left column, line 3 from the top, it should read ''higher'' (onset age) instead of ''lower''. Corrected text should read …. the disorder is more likely to have already developed in individuals with higher liability, whereas those with lower liability (one of the manifestations of which is a higher onset age) have not yet realized their risk.

“…Employing several factor analytic and item response theory methods, a 45-item scale was eventually distilled that investigators posited indexed the transmissible risk to SUDs, that is, risk passed from parents to offspring and not confounded with active substance abuse. Subsequent reports support the validity of the TLI; for example, scores predict the onset and escalation of use and the onset of SUDs and are highly heritable (Hicks, Iacono, & McGue, 2012; Kirisci et al, 2009; Vanyukov et al, 2009).…”

“…In the case of propensity, the instruments for measuring the risks of developing addiction are few and far apart (Conway et al, 2010). Still, an instrument (Transmissible Liability Index) was put together by the Center for Education and Drug Abuse Research, using items from numerous psychological and psychiatric scales to characterize users' behaviours/personalities and their likelihood of substance use disorder Vanyukov et al, 2009).…”

“…Other drugs were combined and included opioid use (six subjects) and cocaine use (three subjects). The average SUD onset age was 14.7 years old [standard deviation (SD) 1.6; range [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. A life-time history of mental disorders was significantly more common in the SUD group than in the control group (Table 1), including CD, ADHD and MDD.…”

“…DBD and MDD tend to cluster in adolescents with SUD ([8], see [9] for review). Dimensional constructs representing attentional, conduct and mood problems have been found to provide psychometrically valid representations of psychological dysregulation that predict adolescent SUD [10,11]. Psychological dysregulation scales have been found to be elevated in adolescents with SUD compared to reference adolescents [12].…”
