Measurement of the Thermal Neutron Capture Cross Section of Cs-137

Abstract: Thermal neutrons / Cross section / Cesium-137 / Activation / Gamma spectrometry / Fission product SummaryMeasurements of the thermal neutron cross section of the reaction 137 Cs(n,y) l38 Cs have been performed using high resolution y-ray spectrometry and applying covariance analysis to all uncertainties involved. The result was (0.253 ±0.015) b. This result is discussed and compared with previous measurements.

“…The waiting times for the first gamma-ray spectrum measurement run of the KNO 3 the other relevant activity is 24 Na, an expected contaminant since K and Na belong to the same chemical family. In AuAl monitors, no contaminant was identifed.…”

“…The experimental procedure was similar to that used in 137 Cs and 57 Co neutron capture cross section measurements reported in [3] and [4]. The thermal and epithermal fluxes were calculated using the Westcott formalism [1], the cadmium ratio method [5] and the cadmium separation components methodology proposed by Axton [6].…”
