Measurement of the widths ofLηandLllines of tungsten

Abstract

The widths of the L7i(L2M&) and Ll(L3Mt) lines of tungsten have been measured with a highresolution 90-cm-radius bent-crystal Cauchois spectrograph.The measured values have been compared with those of earlier workers. The difference I'(L2) -I'(L3) between the widths of the L2 and L3 levels of tungsten, as obtained from the present measurements, is in good agreement with that deduced from widths of the LPt(L2M4) and La2 (L3M&) lines measured by us earlier. The relativistic estimates of Chen and co-workers for I'(L3), I'(M4), and I'(M5) are found to be consistent with our linewidth measurements. However, I'(L2) seems to have been underestimated by these authors, thus indicating a need for a fresh look at the relativistic estimate of the nonradiative component of I'(L2) of tungsten. Our measurements further reveal that McGuire's nonrelativistic calculations have led to values of I'(Mt) which are too large. The situation seems to have been only partly remedied by the recent relativistic calculations of I'(Mt) by Chen and co-workers.
