Measurement of total and differential W + W − production cross sections in proton-proton collisions at s = 8 $$ \sqrt{s}=8 $$ TeV with the ATLAS detector and limits on anomalous triple-gauge-boson couplings

Abstract: The production of W boson pairs in proton-proton collisions at √ s = 8 TeV is studied using data corresponding to 20.3 fb −1 of integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS detector during 2012 at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The W bosons are reconstructed using their leptonic decays into electrons or muons and neutrinos. Events with reconstructed jets are not included in the candidate event sample. A total of 6636 W W candidate events are observed. Measurements are performed in fiducial regions closely app… Show more

“…Most likely, missing higher order corrections for the p T spectrum of the diboson system may play a significant role in such a discrepancy. This is the case also in WW → lνlν channel, where a similar discrepancy was observed by ATLAS [30]. In leptonic WW , a veto on events with jets is applied: the jet veto enhances contributions beyond fixed order calculations, possibly causing the disagreement.…”

“…The new 13 TeV measurements agree with the expectations, but the statistics available is still limited and such result needs improvements from 2016 data. Concerning WW and W Z 8 TeV measurements, an order of two standard deviations disagreement with respect to MC was observed in the W Z → lνl + l − channel, by both ATLAS [27] and CMS [28], as shown in fig. 5 (a).…”

“…During the Run I of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the production of a pair of vector bosons was one of the processes studied in greatest detail [1][2][3][4][5][6]. The Higgs boson was initially discovered through its decay into dibosons, and this decay channel continues to be important for measuring the properties of the Higgs [7][8][9][10].…”
