Measurement of total antioxidant capacity in sub-μL blood samples using craft paper-based analytical devices

Abstract: Antioxidants play a role in counteracting free radicals and reactive oxygen species and are thought to help prevent or slow the progression of many chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative diseases. Herein we report a simple way to make a colorimetric assay for measuring total antioxidant capacity (TAC) on craft paper-based analytical devices (cPADs) suitable for sub-μL volume blood samples. We incorporated a microfluidic separation mechanism for isolat… Show more

“…This drawback prevents the applicability of the simplest paper patterning method for the fabrication of µPADs applicable to assays with very small sample volumes. Although a paper-based device obtained by a craft punch technique suitable for the handling of sub-microliter sample volumes has been reported, no sample liquid transport in a microfluidic channel is involved, and samples have to be applied directly to the detection zone [ 16 ].…”

“…However, the equipment cost is typically rather high. The other low-cost and repeatable cutting method to make PADs is craft punch patterning [ 19 , 20 ]. In wax-printing methods [ 21 , 22 , 23 ], wax is printed on the surface of the paper in the desired configuration and a heating process is then performed such that the wax melts and penetrates into the paper to form hydrophobic channels.…”
