Measurement properties of clinical assessment methods for classifying generalized joint hypermobility—A systematic review

Abstract: The purpose was to perform a systematic review of clinical assessment methods for classifying Generalized Joint Hypermobility (GJH), evaluate their clinimetric properties, and perform the best evidence synthesis of these methods. Four test assessment methods (Beighton Score [BS], Carter and Wilkinson, Hospital del Mar, RotesQuerol) and two questionnaire assessment methods (Five-part questionnaire [5PQ], Beighton Score-self reported [BS-self]) were identified on children or adults. Using the Consensus-based Sta… Show more

“…The rhythmic gymnasts were categorized as being hypermobile if they scored on 5 or more of 9 variables. 26 Beighton score was assessed clinically and data on UI, menarche, and the female athlete triad were collected by an electronic questionnaire. The data on these variables were collected at a national competition and in a regular club training setting by one examiner only and who was a trained sports physical therapist (MCDG).…”

“…The BS consists of a single measure of forward bending at the lower back and testing of bilateral joints (fifth finger extension, elbow extension, knee extension and thumb‐to‐forearm opposition). Scores range from 0/9 with a score of 5/9 consistent with GJH in adults age 18–49 as per the 2017 diagnostic criteria for hEDS (Juul‐Kristensen, Schmedling, Rombaut, Lund, & Engelbert, ). The cutoff for GJH changes with age with a score of 4/9 considered GJH in adults over age 50 and a score of 6/9 considered GJH in children and adolescents under age 18.…”

“…Kirby and Davies (2007) reported a significant increase in the prevalence of JHS in children with DCD (37%) vs. typically developing children (7.4%) (p < 0.05) (Kirby & Davies, 2007). These authors used the five-point questionnaire to measure JH, which is more commonly used in the adult population and has not been validated for the paediatric population (Juul-Kristensen, Schmedling, Rombaut, Lund, & Engelbert, 2017). (Blank et al, 2011).…”
