Measurement Tools and Utility of Hair Analysis for Screening Adherence to Antihypertensive Medication

Abstract: Poor adherence to the prescribed antihypertensive therapy is an understated public health problem and is one of the main causes of the high prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension in sub-Saharan Africa. Medication adherence is vital for the effectiveness of antihypertensive treatment and is key to ameliorating the clinical outcomes in hypertensive patients. However, it has often been ignored because the current methods used to assess medication adherence are not reliable, limiting their utilization in clinical… Show more

“…From the viewpoint of research methodology, as a consistent approach throughout its progress as a field of research in its own right, environmental monitoring and biomonitoring of human life have been guided by various hypotheses, which has necessitated separate approach of environmental contaminants; therefore, various targeted analytical methods are currently available for the accurate measurement of contaminants in biofluids, food, air, drinking water and soil. Two major exposome approaches have been developed to identify human exposures with pathogenic impact, namely the bottom-up approach (study of substances in environmental components) and the top-down approach (investigation of substances on bio sample level) [37,64]. The bottom-up approach takes into account the external exposure, through environmental factors, air, water, radiation, but also through diet or lifestyle to quantify the levels of summed contaminants and estimate individual exposures.…”
