Measurements and modeling of friction torque of wind turbine blade bearings

Abstract: The friction torque of rotor blade bearings is a required parameter for the design of pitch actuators and may provide information about continued degradation and impending failure of the bearing. The torque is heavily influenced by the operating conditions and external loads acting on the bearing. Test results for real-size bearings under realistic loads are rare. This paper presents test results of various double-row four-point bearings of three different diameters, ranging from 0.7m up to 5m. They are loaded… Show more

“…To obtain measurements dedicated to the bearings, the measured torque has to be adjusted to eliminate the influence of the gearbox. A detailed description of this procedure is given in [28]. After assembling two test bearings to the test rig, each pair of bearings is tested with three different test programs to assess their individual friction torque properties.…”

“…Large-diameter pitch bearing tests have been conducted to determine friction torque (González et al 2008;Han et al 2015;Menck et al 2022) and fatigue lives and wear characteristics (Handreck et al 2015;Becker et al 2017;Grebe et al 2018;He et al 2018;Schwack, Prigge, and Poll 2018;Fischer and Mönnig 2019;Schwack et al 2020;Schwack et al 2021;Song and Karikari-Boateng 2021). Other assessments have been made of the turbine controller characteristics Menck, Stammler, and Schleich 2020;Stammler et al 2020) and stiffening plates (Loriemi et al 2020).…”
