Measurements and modelling of fast-ion redistribution due to resonant MHD instabilities in MAST

Abstract: Abstract. The results of a comprehensive investigation into the effects of toroidicityinduced Alfvén eigenmodes (TAE) and energetic particle modes on the NBI-generated fast-ion population in MAST plasmas are reported. Fast-ion redistribution due to frequency-chirping TAE in the range 50 kHz to 100 kHz, and frequency-chirping energetic particle modes known as fishbones in the range 20 kHz to 50 kHz, is observed. TAE and fishbones are also observed to cause losses of fast ions from the plasma. The spatial and te… Show more

“…Fast NBI ion redistribution with a concomitant drop in neutron rates has been observed in DIII-D discharges in the presence of a large magnetic island [24]. In MAST bursts of n = 1, m = 1 fishbone modes and TAEs have been reported to cause drops in the neutron rate [25]. TAEs are not observed in JET discharges heated only by NBI, as investigated here.…”

“…A similar example of this kind of model validation has recently been carried out at MAST. In this case, a set of complementary fast ion diagnostics, including the MAST neutron camera, were used in conjunction with modeling to study fast ion behavior during TAEs and fishbone instabilities [34,35]. The MAST neutron camera has also been used in a similar way to study sawtooth redistribution [36].…”

“…Many FIDA systems have two or three viewing directions rather than the five available at ASDEX Upgrade. DIII-D has three FIDA views [46,47] and MAST [48,49], NSTX [50], EAST [51], and LHD have two views [52,53]. In figure 8 we reconstruct the six cases from figure 7 using just two FIDA views to show that this approach could be useful for other machines.…”
